Hey there, and welcome to Pulse Pour.
I’m Brandyn, and I created this site to help everyday coffee drinkers make better pour-over coffee at home — without complicated recipes, confusing gear, or the coffee snobbery that sometimes comes with specialty coffee.
Because here’s the thing: pour-over coffee can bring out some of the best flavor, body, acidity, sweetness, and clarity coffee has to offer. But getting there shouldn’t feel overwhelming.
Pulse Pour is here to make the process simple, practical, and enjoyable, so you can start brewing cleaner, richer, better-tasting coffee one small improvement at a time.
Why I Created Pulse Pour
I created Pulse Pour because I believe every coffee drinker should be able to experience not just good coffee, but great coffee.
And you shouldn’t need hard-to-use gear, complicated brew recipes, or a deep coffee vocabulary to get there.
Here, we break down everything related to pour-over coffee in a fun, easy-to-follow, and practical way. Whether you’re just getting started or trying to fix a cup that keeps turning out bitter, sour, weak, or muddy, my goal is to help you understand what’s happening — and what to adjust next.
Where My Coffee Obsession Started
I still remember my first cup of coffee.
I was only 8 years old when my grandmother made me an offer I couldn’t refuse: she said I could have a cup from the pot she had just brewed.
Now, this was definitely not pour-over coffee. In fact, I’m pretty sure it came from an automatic coffee maker and probably used a less exciting Robusta blend.
But at the time, I didn’t know anything about coffee varieties, brew methods, extraction, or flavor notes. I only knew one thing:
I was about to drink what the adults drank.
That first sip was extremely hot and bitter, but I played it cool. I added some milk to cool it down and soften the bitterness. At first, I wasn’t exactly a fan — but you better believe I finished every last drop.
I felt proud. I felt mature. And, more than anything, I thought it was pretty cool that my grandmother trusted me with “adult coffee.”
That memory stuck with me.
Years later, after cup after cup of what I now realize was pretty terrible coffee, I started researching ways to make better coffee at home. That’s when I came across pour-over.
Just like you might be doing now, I stumbled into it while looking for better answers.
At first, my brews were far from perfect. But after plenty of trial and error, I started making cups that tasted completely different from what I thought coffee could be.
Cleaner. Sweeter. Brighter. More balanced.
That’s when the obsession really kicked in.
Now, I’m constantly experimenting with grinders, kettles, grind sizes, brewers, filters, water temperature, and, of course, coffee beans. I love how one small adjustment can change the entire cup. Even better, I love the challenge of bringing out subtle notes that were hiding in the background and making them actually stand out.
My Beginner Struggles
When I first started making pour-over coffee, I used a V60.
And honestly? Grind size gave me the most trouble.
Some cups were too bitter. Others were weak, sour, or just flat. For me, most of those problems came down to the grind size I was using, along with one other big mistake:
I kept changing too many things at once.
I wasn’t tracking my brews, so I had no clear way to know what worked and what didn’t. If I had started with a simple brewing journal, I would have figured out my problem a lot faster.
That’s one of the reasons I built Pulse Pour the way I did — to help you avoid the same guessing game.

My Favorite Beginner Setup
For beginners, I like to keep things simple and forgiving.
My favorite beginner-friendly setup includes:
- A Chemex for a clean, forgiving brew
- A Cosori gooseneck kettle for simple temperature control
- A coffee scale for consistent ratios
- A Cevings Mega Pro grinder for a more consistent grind and larger bean capacity

It may not be the fanciest setup in the world, but that’s the point. You don’t need to overcomplicate your first pour-over setup. You just need gear that helps you build consistency and understand what’s happening in your cup.
